In 1888, during the monarchy era of Hawai‘i, King Kalakaua commissioned the establishment of a magazine, Paradise of the Pacific, with the intent to represent the islands on a global scale. Over time, this publication underwent a significant transformation, leading to its evolution into the now-renowned HONOLULU Magazine in 1966. Unlike its prior focus on promoting local businesses and tourism within the United States, HONOLULU Magazine shifted its attention to becoming a platform created by and for the people of the Hawaiian Islands.

Presently, HONOLULU Magazine stands as one of the few publications in the United States that has documented the events spanning an entire century. It boasts the distinction of being the oldest established magazine west of the Mississippi and currently remains as the sole monthly city magazine in Hawai‘i.
